Food Lion wanted a grassroots program, complementing traditional advertising, that would reach at least 100,000 consumers to increase awareness of and preference for Guiding Stars in five key markets (Washington, DC; Norfolk, VA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Greenville, SC).

One of their competitors made a premature announcement stating that they would be the first green grocery store. Food Lion had to dispel that rumor and prove to state officials and media that their store would, in fact, be the first.
