Top 5 Ways to Achieve Balance on the Road

by Matthew Lippert

Nowadays, everybody's personal life is crazy and work can be hectic. Keeping your work and your personal life balanced can be tough. Throw the added stress of traveling for work into the mix, and that balancing act can become quite complicated. So, how does one achieve this balance while being away from home for work over 50 percent of the year? You have to stay connected, have good time management, patience and make the most of your time at home.

1. Communicate
Good communication is the key to any good relationship, work-related or personal. Therefore, staying connected with family, friends and your significant other is very important. With today's modern technology, it's easier than ever. Pretty much everyone has a cell phone these days, so keeping in touch is just a phone call away. A lot of phones have web-enabled browsers on them too. That makes catching up with your pals on your favorite social networking site or through emails easier. Also, most hotels have a computer with internet access in the lobby for their guests. Now you just need to find some free time to stay connected.

2. Be Efficient
Managing you time well can really cut down on your stress. Make sure you optimize your time by taking care of things as quickly and efficiently as possible. Don't procrastinate. I'm guilty of this, and all it does is cause me to stress and rush to get things done. Your tension will most likely be projected onto others as well. Getting your work done in a timely manner makes for more free time to relax and take care of personal needs, and sometimes we just need that time for ourselves. Finding this balance takes some time and patience.

3. Be Patient
They say patience is a virtue. If you have it, patience makes you a more tolerant and understanding person. That equates to less stress, because you don't want to end up like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScyR6fPr1m8. So, keeping your cool and having patience while traveling can help you out in any situation with work or dealing with issues away from home. That way, when you get home you are not dealing with issues you created from being on the road.

4. Make plans
Making the most out of your time at home can make up for all the lost time from being on the road. Make plans to spend quality time with your loved ones and be sensitive to their needs. Take care of any work you need to do quickly. Then leave the work where it belongs—at work. Also, complete all your personal projects at home in a timely manner so you get to relaxing as soon as possible. Nobody wants someone nagging at them to get things done when they could be chilling with their feet kicked up or out playing some golf with the boys.

5. Prioritize
You need to figure out what matters the most to you and put that first. Is it your family, your career or maybe a hobby or sport? Make a list if necessary. Once you figure out what you can't live without, make the most time for that and cut out activities that are not as important. Finding a balance between traveling for work and personal life is difficult, but it can be done. It takes some time and flexibility. If you stick with it, you can achieve balance. The structure I follow and have shared brings stability and balance to my life. Work hard and play harder. That's the motto I like to live by. How do you bring balance to your life?
